David R. Geller, MD

Training and background

Dr. David Geller earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Bioengineering at the University of Illinois, working with cutting-edge technology before turning to medicine. He attended the University of Louisville School of Medicine, completed his residency at Michigan State University where he trained with national leaders in bariatric surgery, and completed additional advanced laparoscopic bariatric training at Ohio State University.

He was the founding medical director of the bariatric surgery program at Norton Women’s and Children’s Hospital — then Norton Suburban Hospital — which he built and led to Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence designation in 2009. Under that program, the national standard of its day, individual surgeons were evaluated and designated as well as hospitals, and Dr. Geller held Center of Excellence designation as a surgeon. He began his Louisville practice as an independent surgeon and has remained one.

Dr. Geller does not run group informational seminars. He found that whether the room held 5 people or 50, attendees were not coming away with a deep enough understanding to make an informed decision about a life-altering operation. So the seminar content is delivered one-on-one, inside a consultation scheduled for a full hour.

He is also the surgeon you meet at that consultation and the surgeon who performs your operation. In an era of large multi-surgeon programs, that continuity is worth asking about wherever you go.

Where surgery is performed

Dr. Geller performs all of his surgery at PMC Regional Hospital (Physicians' Medical Center), 4023 Reas Lane in New Albany, Indiana — a surgical hospital co-owned by physicians practicing in Kentuckiana, about fifteen minutes across the river from the Louisville office.

Operating at a single facility is deliberate. The same operating room team, the same nursing staff, and the same post-operative routine on every case is one of the quieter reasons the complication rates stay where they are.

About accreditation

Bariatric programs can be accredited through MBSAQIP, run jointly by the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. PMC Regional Hospital is not MBSAQIP-accredited.

MBSAQIP assesses a program's infrastructure — staffing, protocols, case volume, registry reporting. It does not evaluate individual surgeons. The earlier ASMBS Center of Excellence program did, and Dr. Geller held that designation. He was also medical director of the bariatric surgery program at Norton Women’s and Children’s Hospital, then Norton Suburban, when it earned Center of Excellence recognition in 2009. These standards are familiar ground here, not something avoided.
